MISSION

Empower the community through a primary prevention lens, shifting to impact at the upstream of prevention

The Community Based Child Abuse Prevention Program, through its mission, vision, and strategic planning, has been working to empower the community through a primary prevention lens, shifting to impact at the upstream of prevention, also using the Communities that care model. In the capacity of a CTC Community Organizer, our commitment revolves around catalyzing positive transformation and fortifying the interpersonal ties that bind us together. We employ the evidence-based “Communities that Care” model to enhance the life outcomes of residents in various neighborhoods. Our mission revolves around the cultivation of vibrant communities wherein each voice finds resonance, and every member experiences a sense of value and support.

“Communities that Care” Model

CBCAP has been actively working in the communities of Staten Island and East Harlem for many years to build a support system for families who are at risk of or have experienced Intimate partner violence, maltreatment, family violence, and/or trauma. Our coordinated efforts to scale up this support system over the past few years has served as a foundation for implementation of the proposed Communities that Care model in both communities. CBCAP has begun the groundwork for implementing this model by conducting needs assessments, collaborating with the Community Based Organizations, and building up a broad network of community partners who are expected to participate in its implementation. Our strategy involves leveraging strategic partnerships to extend the reach of our educational initiatives on neighborhood resources, ensuring a broader dissemination of information to families.

About the CBCAP Program

Research and community data support our firm belief that investing in early upstream services offers our community the greatest potential to uproot poverty, equalize opportunities for education and health, and build nurturing and supportive communities.

CBCAP links the services of community-based organizations and municipal services with small community groups that would connect people with jobs, housing, and services such as employment services, education, addiction treatment, parent education, family therapy, and counseling. The anticipated impact of the Communities that Care intervention has been significant. Listening to the voices of the community to understand their needs, using data informed by both risk and protective factors, and soliciting input from all sectors of the community in developing service priorities will have a broad and powerful impact on the success of the services for the target population.

In simple terms, we can assist with various short-term needs, which include but are not limited to, assisting with paying a utility bill, buying short term groceries, helping with formula, diapers, and toiletries. These are just some of the items CBCAP can support with in order to assist families get back on their feet.

Partnerships & Collaborations

We have collaborated with community partners in Staten Island and Harlem for the Thanksgiving Turkey giveaways. We have also collaborated with Healthy Families Staten Island for the Christmas toy giveaway. Continued collaboration with Family and Youth Peer Services Staten Island, Staten Island Community Partnership and Healthy Families Staten Island has proven fruitful in the “North Shore”. CBCAP has also collaborated with ENDGBV in both East Harlem and Staten Island and will continue to do so in order to assist families impacted by the violence they seek to dissolve.

The children and families in East Harlem and Staten Island are strengthened by their strong family bonds, active community boards, resiliency in their fight for change and a better future, and awareness of the challenges they face. CBCAP has come up with additional funds to support families in need affected by DV/IPV in order to support in “Concrete Needs” acquisition.
